Super Trend and RSI - Tradingview Multilength

This TradingView setup pairs two well-known tools that answer different questions. The Super Trend indicator tells you which direction the market is leaning, and the RSI Multi-Length oscillator on TradingView helps you judge whether momentum is stretched. Neither one predicts the future. The idea is simply to read trend and momentum together, confirm on a closed candle, and skip the setups where the two disagree.

What Super Trend Plots

Super Trend is built on Average True Range (ATR). At its default settings - an ATR period of 10 and a multiplier of 3 - it plots a single line that sits below price and turns the chart "up" during rallies, then flips above price and turns "down" during declines. It is a trend-following tool, which means it is reactive by design: it confirms a move after it has begun rather than calling it in advance. In a clean, directional market that lag is acceptable. In a sideways range it is the weak point, because the line flips back and forth and produces whipsaws - repeated colour changes that would have you switching sides on noise. Widening the multiplier or the ATR period slows those flips but adds more lag, so there is always a trade-off.

What RSI Multi-Length Reads

The Relative Strength Index measures the speed of recent price changes on a 0-100 scale. A standard 14-period RSI marks 70 as overbought and 30 as oversold; the Lux Algo "Multi-Length" version evaluates RSI across several lengths at once and shades the result, which can smooth out some of the single-length noise but, like any averaging, adds a little lag of its own. Overbought does not mean "sell now" and oversold does not mean "buy now" - a strong trend can stay stretched for a long time. Treat RSI as a read on momentum and exhaustion, not a standalone signal.

Setting Up the Chart

  1. Add Super Trend from the Indicators tab. The defaults (ATR period 10, multiplier 3) are a sensible starting point; some traders shorten these for faster markets, but expect more whipsaws when they do.
  2. Add RSI Multi-Length (Lux Algo). Keep the source on close, and set the overbought and oversold levels to 70 and 30, or widen them to 80 and 20 if you only want the more extreme readings flagged.
  3. Trade a small number of liquid instruments you know, and let every candle close before you act on a colour change or an RSI reading.

Reading Direction and Timing

Use Super Trend for direction and RSI for timing:

Always confirm on the close of the candle. Intrabar, both the Super Trend colour and the RSI value can shift and then settle elsewhere by the time the bar finishes.

When This Combination Fails

The pairing struggles in exactly the conditions that trap most trend tools: quiet, range-bound sessions. Super Trend whipsaws, RSI oscillates around the middle, and back-to-back false flips can stack up. Adding the Multi-Length evaluation reduces some of that noise but cannot remove it, and every layer of smoothing you add is paid for with lag. No indicator combination removes losing trades, so decide your risk per trade in advance, cap how many trades you take, and step away when conditions are choppy. Practising on a demo chart first is the safest way to learn where the setup works and where it breaks.

FAQ

Does the Super Trend and RSI combo work in a ranging market?

This is its weakest environment. Super Trend is trend-following, so a sideways range makes it flip colour repeatedly and whipsaw, while RSI drifts around the midpoint without a clear read. The combination is easier to use when a market is actually trending; in a range, standing aside is often the better decision.

What do "Multilength" and the default settings mean?

"Multi-Length" means the RSI is evaluated across several lengths at once instead of a single 14-period setting, which can average out some noise at the cost of a little extra lag. Super Trend's common defaults are an ATR period of 10 and a multiplier of 3. Shorter values react faster but whipsaw more; longer values are steadier but slower.

Do I need to pay to use these indicators?

Both Super Trend and RSI Multi-Length are available on TradingView, so you can build this setup without a purchase. If you want the wider library of MetaTrader indicators and strategies bundled together, that is covered by the $39 lifetime plan.

For more on each tool on its own, see the Super Trend indicator guide, the RSI Alert indicator, and this Pocket Option Super Trend strategy.
